Joaquim Paiva, collector donated this artwork “escapes from darkness beckon” by Julie Brook Alexander to the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM), Brazil. Joaquim’s collection at MAM is known as “The Joaquim Paiva Collection/ Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil”

“Your photograph is included in a group of 413 prints by 122 photographers of my Foreign Photography Collection that I sent  to MAM on March 29, 2011, out of a total of 137 artists that I have collected so far. I have been purchasing my photographs mostly at Houston FotoFest and other international Festivals.

My first donation to MAM, in 2005, comprised 1090 images by 125 Brazilian photographers, the second one of foreign photographers as I mentioned and a third one, once more of Brazilian photography,  in January 2012. The Museum now has a rich body of 1963 works by 327 photographers that I have collected in the last 30 years.

As a collector, I consider that building a cooperative relationship with a museum is a good way to make a collection available to the public and the future generations. I am glad to have your work at MAM in Rio de Janeiro, as well as most of my collection.” – Joaquim Paiva, collector
